Holiday Crafts for Kids: Five Easy Ideas

Kids love to help us parents get ready for the holidays. Here are five easy craft projects to help your home look more festive than ever.

Some of these craft projects are best enjoyed together. Others will keep your kids happy and occupied as you do your own holiday preparations.

1. Make a turkey (or other centerpiece) from natural items.
This craft is fun for everyone, and very eco-friendly. Take your kids on a nature walk or a simple walk through the local grocery store. Pick items for different parts of the turkey. Pine cones and leaves can form the body and feathers of the turkey, for example. Or, if you are in the supermarket, choose different sized gourds and corn leaves. Glue the pieces together using craft glue or use some toothpicks, depending on the age of your children.

2. Beaded bracelets
Beaded bracelets can be used for a wide variety of different holidays. This project is also very adaptable to any age group. Preschoolers can use pipe cleaners and pony beads to create easy bracelets. Older children can string pony beads on plastic lace. Pre-teens can use a needle, thread and seed beads. Pick colors related to the holiday that you are preparing for. For example, gold, red and brown can create festive Thanksgiving bracelets. Red, green, silver and gold are perfect for Christmas and blue and silver will be great for Hanukkah.

3. Gingerbread houses
This yearly treat is fun for everyone. There are gingerbread house kits available that have everything you need for a simple house, or you can create your own. Using graham crackers, cream cheese frosting or white icing, gum drops, licorice and other pieces of candy you can create your own designs. Be creative with your items and you’ll have totally unique gingerbread houses.

4. Gift tags
These craft projects are practical and fun, too. There are so many different ways you can create gift tags that you can make some with whatever you have on hand. Use cardboard, tag board or decorative paper and cut out squares, circles, ovals and unique shapes. Your children can use stamps to create the designs on the tags using appropriate holiday colors and designs. They can also use markers to draw their own designs. Use sequins, glitter, bits of ribbon and stickers, too. Older kids can put “to” and “from” information on the back of the tags.

5. Felt projects
A few sheets of felt, some scissors and some glue are all you need to create a great variety of holiday crafts year round. White felt circles, a top hat and some beads are all you need for some felt snowmen. Green felt tree shapes, yellow stars and beads make an easy craft. Yellow felt stars can be jazzed up with some gold glitter. This craft is only limited by your imagination and your children’s skill level.

These craft projects are easily adaptable to any age level and will make the holidays even more fun for everyone.

Why Not Travel this New Year’s Eve?

New Year’s Eve parties used to be celebrated at the homes of family and friends. However, since massive-scale parties are broadcast on television for all to see, there is a longing in many Americans to hit the streets and live large for the night. Whether you plan on bundling up in Times Square or wearing that slinky dress to a Miami gala event, there are many options for the New Year’s Eve party hunter.

Each year, people look for a new kind of experience that fosters an environment of “letting loose” and “going wild,” yet also one that is comfortable. Here are some of the best New Year’s parties around the world.

Why not spend this New Years Eve in France? In Paris, you can see cabaret shows at Pigalle Place, take a Seine River dinner cruise, drink champagne at the Champs-Elysees and watch fireworks explode over the Eiffel Tower. If clubbing is one of your New Year traditions, then you may want to check out the Nouveau Casino, The Wagg, Le Troisieme Lieu, the REX Club and Divan du Monde. It might be best to work with a travel agent well in advance to book your France New Year’s Eve experience.

Pasadena, California has been home to some of the nation’s most treasured New Year’s Eve parties and New Year’s Day festivities for more than a century. The 121st Tournament of Roses parade will take place on January 1, 2010 at 8 am, featuring towering floats designed from roses, high-stepping horses, ballroom dancers, pyrotechnic displays and marching bands. Following the parade, the 91st Rose Bowl football game will take place featuring the top two college teams in the country. The history of the Rose Bowl began as the “Tournament East-West football game” in 1902 with Stanford playing the University of Michigan. After a score of 49-0 (Michigan), the officials wondered if chariot races, ostrich races and other events would be better than football. However, football returned with a vengeance in 1916, with The State College of Washington vs. Brown University in the first annual Rose Bowl game. With sports and parades, Pasadena has something for the whole family.

There are celebrations pretty much everywhere, so it’s up to you what sort of New Year’s Eve parties you’d like to attend. For some people, it’s all about the warm weather and the beaches. After all, why not start the new year with a pleasant vacation an escape from the dreary winter weather? For others, it’s about New Year traditions and experiencing the Big Apple like they’ve seen on television since they were kids. For sports fanatics, it’s about the big game and tailgating with friends.

For a lot of people, New Year’s Eve is the best night of the year. Find great New Years Eve ideas for celebrating this festive occasion at the Christmas Ideas site.

What Makes For Great Family Days Out?

In a few words, something that you can all enjoy, not just the kids. Many so called family days out are haunted by the depressing spectre of a dad trudging round various attractions and feigning enthusiasm, let alone interest, in the bead and glitter creations of his offspring or the history of handbags exhibit his partner seems so fascinated by. Depending on how far you have travelled, family days out have to worth making the effort to get there in the first place!

If your brood is into animals and nature, there are few better places than South Wales for excellent and enjoyable family days out. They can even be educational in a sneaky sort of way! The national Showcaves Centre for Wales for example takes you 500 metres underground with impressive views of stalagmites, stalactites and underground waterfalls. The WWT National Wetland Centre Wales is home to hundreds of geese, swans and even flamingos that are so tame they feed from your hand, while the Welsh Hawking Centre and Animal Park has over 200 birds of prey including eagles, hawks and buzzards.

If your idea of family days out is excitement and education indoors, then there’s several attractions to choose from including Techniquest in Cardiff with over 160 hands-on interactive exhibits, rocket launchings, electric car races and hot air balloons or the National Museum of Wales with a spectacular array of dinosaur exhibits . Water parks can be fun too and there’s a plethora of well equipped centres in Cardiff and Newport. Naturally if it’s castles and history you’re after, then Wales is stuffed full of them but one favourite day out surely must be taking a leisurely trip in an electric day boat along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, or enjoying the spectacular scenery from the narrow gauge coaches of the Brecon Mountain railway.

Family Holidays in the UK

The messages are mixed and the data is confusing. The accepted wisdom is that, in credit-crunched Britain with the economy in recession and Sterling weak against the Euro, more families are taking holidays at home. Travel companies report that bookings are holding up well to the sun spots of the Med, but even if they ultimately decide to shell out and head for the guaranteed warmth of Spain, Greece or Turkey, more Britons are at least prepared to look at family holidays in the UK.

A top domestic destination has proven to be Wales. It’s easy to get to from most of central and southern England and for a relatively small country Wales has a big choice of holidays, from the traditional seaside holiday with buckets and spades on glorious sandy beaches, to climbing sheer rock faces in the Snowdonia range of mountains. Other options tend to be more energetic, such as mountain biking, horse riding and pony trekking, canoeing, walking and the latest craze called coasteering – jumping from cliffs into the sea - a pastime previously called suicide. More sane pastimes also include golfing or sailing on tranquil lakes or from the many marinas dotted around the coast.

Family holidays UK don’t get much more traditional than the good old British beach holiday, and Wales certainly has a number of top seaside resorts to choose from. In the north of Wales Llandudno, Colwyn Bay, Beaumaris, Prestatyn, Cemaes Bay and Anglesey offer 125 miles of beaches, beautiful harbour villages and historic sites. North west Wales and the Lleyn Peninsula features Criccieth, Pwllheli, Porthmadog, Harlech, Aberdaron and Barmouth. The west coast and Cardigan Bay boast Aberystwyth, New Quay, Gwbert on Sea, and Aberporth while the beaches of Tenby and Saundersfoot in the south west and Pembrokeshire are stunning and relatively undiscovered. For Carmarthenshire and the Gower, the holidaymaker can choose from the Gower Peninsula, Pendine, Swansea, Port Eynon, and Oxwich.

If you want to combine a value for money holiday with a minimal carbon footprint, then mountain biking holidays are an obvious choice, for the fitter among us at least! Wales has some of the best mountain bike trails in the UK and the best known has to be the Marin Route, a challenging 15 mile ride from Betws y Coed through the rugged Gwydir Forest in Snowdonia. More trails are being constructed, with two further routes totalling 30 miles to be opened soon in nearby Penmachno.

For those who like the outdoors but don’t fancy expending that much energy, camping seems to be making a comeback as the ideal adventure family holidays in the UK. Wales has dozens of excellent campsites ranging from a pitch in a farmer’s field to luxury “supersites” with all the amenities. Some of the best are in Cardigan Bay, where you can pitch your tent on the end of a headland looking out to sea. If you’re lucky, you might catch sight of the dolphins that inhabit these waters and have been spotted in pods of over 2,000 strong.

Kids love UK Holiday Breaks

Filming dolphins at Barmouth

I love to holiday in the UK. As a child we were lucky and always got to goa broad for holidays. As an adult with a car, I very much enjoy spending a week in Devon or a weekend in Shropshire catching up on what the UK has to offer. The best holidays have to be UK family holidays. Days knocking hammers on rocks trying to find fossils off the Jurassic Coast in Dorset. Or great family days out jumping on surfboards to ride out in Cornwall. One of my favourite UK family trips is to Wales. I love to drive along the coast with the breathtaking backdrop of Snowdonia national park. There is a fantastic and beautiful route from Dolgellau to Barmouth which takes you along the Mawddach Estuary. It is a seaside harbour resort that still holds much of its 19th century charm. The children can never wait until they get to keap of rocks into the harbour waters and swim around with the very tame dolphins. From there we move onto Porthmadog - leading to the Llyn Peninsula. Using up unspent energy is an aim when we visit here. Cycling, skateboarding and any other out door activities are our preferences. This is our ‘wear em out’ part of the holiday as we buy local fish and chips for dinner, get the kids to bed and then sink a couple of bottles of wine to remind us that its our turn to relax too. Up sharp the next day to take in Anglesy sea zoo, then off to the beach to make sandcastles and a spot of crabbing. The next stage of the holiday is to trip out to Beaumaris (winner of the 2003 rural Seaside award). It is filled with a Medieval Castle, antique shops, pubs and more. with a lovely rustic feel to the town. When there, we like to go shopping and get ice-creams for the kids as well as play at being Medieval Knights and princesses. Exploring the UK must never be dismissed as a holiday option. Obviously, prepare for any weather eventuality. Once you get your head round that you can only have a wonderful time.

Discovering UK Family Holidays

The weakened pound, especially against the Euro, was supposed to be the impetus for many more Britons taking more holidays in the UK, but equally Sterling’s fall is good news for overseas visitors to the UK. Although some figures suggest that it’s the weather that drives the choice of family holiday destination, there’s no doubt that many more people are considering holidaying at home for a number of reasons. Those need not be limited to just cost saving either as there are still some incredible deals to be had on many European and Euro zone destinations, Many potential holiday makers are “rediscovering” the charms, natural beauty and the sheer variety of holiday experiences that the UK has to offer. People over the age of 50 are increasingly spending time away from home during September and October, but these couples still spend the majority of their time holidaying in the UK with most choosing to book an additional break in Europe throughout the year.

The same is true for families who want something that will keep the kids occupied without compromising grown up tastes for scenery, good food and excellent accommodation. Reliability of the weather is the most commonly cited reason for holidaying abroad, but more families are seeking to tailor a holiday to suit their interests and their budget so that their enjoyment is not dependent on hours of unbroken sunshine. Quite a few families seek to do something a little more active than just sunning on a beach. Of all the places in the UK, Wales seems to tick several boxes when it comes to UK family holidays for those wanting to be a bit more active or on a budget. From camping and caravan sites, self catering and Welsh holiday cottages to hostels, Welsh holiday villages, B&Bs and luxury hotels, Wales has a variety of destinations and holiday types to offer, each unique and with an amazing variety in such a short distance.

North Wales offers the visitor an impressive variety of landscapes and experiences including the rugged Isle of Anglesey and the brooding Beaumaris Castle. Snowdonia National Park is the epitome of stunning natural beauty while the youngsters can enjoy the thrill of the Snowdonia Mountain Railway. History buffs can explore Conwy and Caernarfon Castles or the wildlife haven of the Dee estuary. South Wales on the other hand offers radically different experiences with holidays catering for a variety of tastes and activities. From the natural beauty of the green Vale of Neath and the Eastern Valleys to Cardiff and Glamorgan, holidaymakers can explore castles and world class shopping in exciting new waterfront developments in the capital city of Wales or stay in popular Welsh seaside resorts for the archetypical British Seaside holiday.

South Wales holidays are typified by the stunning coast and countryside of Carmarthenshire that includes scenic river valleys and parts of the Brecon Beacons National Park while Cardigan Bay is home some of the UK’s best beaches, excellent surfing and body boarding and is a haven for dolphins and seals.

Chocolate Pearls - A Great Way To Sweeten Up the Holidays

The holidays are fast approaching and it’s time to start thinking about that perfect gift for loved ones. Whether you have a wife, a sister, a mother or just a special woman to buy for this season, you know they deserve something spectacular. The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, jewelry. Where to start? There are so many options out there – necklace, ring, earrings, diamonds, sapphires, pearls – how do you know where to begin?

It can be overwhelming to walk into a jewelry store, especially when you have no idea what you are looking for. A good place to start to head off some of those pre-shopping day jitters is online. Check out some of your favorite online retailers to get some ideas of what you may want to purchase for that special someone. You should find something beautiful and unique that she will cherish for years to come.

Pearls are a great idea for the holidays. You can't go wront with these classic gemstones - their shine and luster cannot be topped. This year, give her pearls that will take her breath away when she opens the package. Give her chocolate – chocolate pearls. These gorgeous, brown, lustrous pearls are a perfect holiday gift. They mix the classic beauty of traditional pearls with the unique sophistication of Tahitian pearls.

All chocolate pearls begin as black Tahitian pearls produced by the black lip oyster. These pearls are cultured and harvested like normal Tahitian pearls but then put through a bleaching procedure. Pearls are put through a two-step bleaching and heating process after harvesting. The result of this is a lustrous, rich, chocolate brown color that has intense iridescence. Chocolate pearls can range in color from dark brown to copper to bronze all with a high luster.

You can also find chocolate pearls that have been colored using dyes and irradiation. These are still cultured (natural) pearls, but the color is manufactured. Companies that produce these dyed chocolate pearls use a silver nitrate to create the brown color. These pearls are "treated" and are much cheaper than authentic Tahitian chocolate pearls. Both are beautiful and the difference most times cannot be detected by the naked eye.

Women traditionally love chocolate, and most would love to add some beautiful chocolate pearls to her jewelry collection. You can find chocolate pearls in almost any setting and style you could imagine. You can find a beautiful chunky necklace that is wrapped with ribbon, or even a simply coppery bracelet. Try a gorgeous chocolate pearl ring set in 18 karat gold. Play it simple by choosing a pair of single stud earrings with a medium bronzed chocolate pearl.

These chocolate pearls are versatile enough for everyday wear and to dress up on special occasions. These are perfect for a holiday gift because your special someone can wear them with her red holiday dress and she will be the talk of the party - guaranteed. Chocolate pearls are a perfect addition to a jewelry collection - she will be sure to remember this holiday for years to come.
