What Makes For Great Family Days Out?
In a few words, something that you can all enjoy, not just the kids. Many so called family days out are haunted by the depressing spectre of a dad trudging round various attractions and feigning enthusiasm, let alone interest, in the bead and glitter creations of his offspring or the history of handbags exhibit his partner seems so fascinated by. Depending on how far you have travelled, family days out have to worth making the effort to get there in the first place!
If your brood is into animals and nature, there are few better places than South Wales for excellent and enjoyable family days out. They can even be educational in a sneaky sort of way! The national Showcaves Centre for Wales for example takes you 500 metres underground with impressive views of stalagmites, stalactites and underground waterfalls. The WWT National Wetland Centre Wales is home to hundreds of geese, swans and even flamingos that are so tame they feed from your hand, while the Welsh Hawking Centre and Animal Park has over 200 birds of prey including eagles, hawks and buzzards.
If your idea of family days out is excitement and education indoors, then there’s several attractions to choose from including Techniquest in Cardiff with over 160 hands-on interactive exhibits, rocket launchings, electric car races and hot air balloons or the National Museum of Wales with a spectacular array of dinosaur exhibits . Water parks can be fun too and there’s a plethora of well equipped centres in Cardiff and Newport. Naturally if it’s castles and history you’re after, then Wales is stuffed full of them but one favourite day out surely must be taking a leisurely trip in an electric day boat along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, or enjoying the spectacular scenery from the narrow gauge coaches of the Brecon Mountain railway.
